Chad le Clos won South Africa an Olympic gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly on 31 July 2012 in London. Born in Durban in 1992, he reached that milestone at 20. The result began the Olympic chapter of a career already established in international swimming.
World Aquatics records a 200m butterfly gold for him at the 2010 World Swimming Championships in Dubai. That competition used a 25-metre pool. Olympedia also lists five medals at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, including gold in the 200m individual medley.
London brought another podium appearance on 3 August 2012, when le Clos took silver in the 100m butterfly. The two medals came at different distances in the same stroke. They make the London achievement broader than a single final, without turning it into a claim that he won both events.
He followed with a butterfly double at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, winning both 100m and 200m. At the 2015 championships in Kazan, he won the 100m again and took silver over 200m. Those results extended his success beyond one Olympic season.
At Rio 2016, le Clos earned silver in the 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly. The freestyle medal added another stroke to his Olympic record. These are specific results from those Games, rather than a total projected forward across his entire career.
World Aquatics then records another 200m butterfly world title in Budapest on 26 July 2017. Taken together, the dates show repeated success across several championships. London 2012 remains the Olympic gold milestone, while the surrounding results explain the depth of the South African swimmer's achievement.
